According to the Union Home Ministry of India 560 communal riots took place only in the year 2012 while the figure reaches to 800 if the last three years are taken together. The Government said 89 persons were killed in different communal clashes this year while 91 people were killed in different communal clashes in the year 2011.
Records show that Uttar Pradesh tops the list with 34 killed and more than 450 injured in 100 communal clashes in the state this year followed by Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh where 13 and 11 causalities recorded respectively. Famous for its communal harmony, the state of Bihar too could not be saved from the spark of communal violence and 17 cases have been registered in the state this year while 7 persons died in 26 communal clashes last year.
