American Federation of Muslims of Indian Origin (AFMI) has earmarked Rs 22 lakh annually to spend on scholarships and help to needy meritorious students even as it aspires for cent per cent literacy for Indian Muslims. Speaking to mediapersons on Friday, AFMI representatives including Dr A R Nakadar, Dr Iqbal Ahmed, Aslam Abndullah and Dr Shakir Mukhi said they spend around Rs 22 lakh annually that includes scholarships to students and financial support to 160 educational institutions in 25 states. According to them, 35,000 students studied in the schools supported by their organisation. In the last 20 years, they claimed to have spent Rs 3 crore towards promoting education among Indian Muslims.
