Prof. S. Imtiaz Hasnain, Chairman, Department of Linguistics said that in northern India Urdu could not bloom as a literary language till the end of the 16th century. However, as a spoken language it spread over many parts of the country and its use as literary language started in the beginning of the seventeenth century. The national seminar was organised in collaboration with Central Institute of Indian Languages, Mysore, National Council for Promotion of Urdu Language, and Indian Language of Social Science Research, New Delhi.
