In a strongly-worded order, a special CBI court on October 8 rejected former junior home minister Amit Shah’s bail plea. Shah was arrested on July 25 this year in connection with the Sohrabuddin fake encounter case and has been cooling heels in the Sabarmati Central Jail ever since. “If released on bail, there is likelihood that the applicant (Shah) may misuse his political power as well his good office to hamper the investigation, by winning over witnesses or by putting them to death,” the court of special CBI judge G K Upadhayay said. The court added a stinging observation: “To let loose the applicant (Shah) scot-free to achieve his ulterior goal would in turn prove to be a dent on the judiciary of the state as well as of the nation.” Finding Shah’s case not fit for bail, the court observed there was “eye-catching evidence” against Shah in the form of statements recorded under Sections 161 & 164 of the Criminal Procedure Code.
