This is in reference to “Will UAPA Not be Misused” (Radiance Viewsweekly, 16-22 December 2012). The writer rightly said that the recent assurances by the Home Minister that there would not be any misuse of the terror laws are nothing new. It seems that the assurances are nothing but farce and would not mean anything once the implementation of the law starts. Unfortunately, the false promises have become one of the foundational pillars of the present democracy where assurances and promises are perpetually forgotten once one assumes power.

With the false assurances in vogue the government gives the clear message that it does not really care. The recent acquittals of innocent Muslim youth because of the false implication by the police are before the eyes of everyone. Everyone is now aware about the modus-operandi of police and security agencies of our country and knows how these laws are misused so as to gain bravery medals, promotions, etc., by showcasing the innocents as terrorists, which becomes a cake walk with laws like UAPA. Hence implementing such laws would only make things chaotic and innocents will suffer at the hands of those greedy security officers who always look for the prized catches.
