India, which claims its tall achievements of being a successful democracy and rising economy, is still ineffective in making the homeless in the national capital warm. Every year in winters, there is the same gruesome story of people dying on roads because of the chill, yet nothing much has been done to make a difference. The government proved itself to be very efficient and effective in building snazzy washrooms, luxurious guest houses and appalling stadiums in a jiffy for the CWG, but when it comes to building permanent/temporary night shelters for the poor and the needy, the government shows its lackadaisical attitude. There are around 56000 homeless people in Delhi and 18 of them have so far succumbed to the plummeting mercury. Adding on to the woes of the homeless, Delhi government gave the decision to close down 84 night shelters citing the excuse of low occupancy. Those which are functional are in pathetic conditions; very few shelters are for women, hence making them more vulnerable to crimes against them.
