Jordanians on June 10 demonstrated in several cities, urging the resignation of Prime Minister Marouf Bakhit’s government for what they called its failure to fight corruption and come up with the needed political reforms. The demonstrators also called for the dissolution of the lower house of Parliament and the abrogation of the peace treaty with Israel, witnesses said. The protests were arranged despite June 9 general amnesty that was decreed by King Abdallah and pardoned about 4,000 prisoners.
The largest protest took place in Tafileh, 180 km south of Amman, where people demonstrated for the fourth week in a row to press their demand for the resignation of the government. Participants shouted slogans and raised placards expressing disapproval of the outcome of the panels set up so far to adopt political and economic reforms. “The people want to topple the government because it lacks willingness to carry out the required reforms,” one slogan said.
