The Babri Masjid verdict came as a shock to the justice-loving people round the globe. It was literally a case of justice delayed, extremely delayed and denied as well. The judges misconstruing their roles played brokers rather judges. Their task was not ‘reconciliation’ (that they actually did by allotting 1/3rd of land to every claimant) but ‘justice’. It’s not first time that Indian democratic values and secular credentials lies in shambles and lofty aspirations of protection of minorities are scoffed at by their guardian institutions. But Supreme Court except Shah Bano verdict has principally maintained a semblance of justice. Now it can only be hoped that such travesty of justice may not repeat itself in the Supreme Court.
