The minority educational institutions are exempted from the Right to Education (RTE) Act if they have 75% students from the minority community. Minority unaided schools are exempted from providing 25 per cent reservation for children from underprivileged sections as per the RTE norms. But, the definition of ‘minority’ had been a bone of contention.

The Karnataka state cabinet defined ‘minority institution,’ putting an end to the confusion. In a minority institution, if the strength of the students is less than 75% then it comes under the ambit of the RTE Act. It has to provide 25% reservation for underprivileged students,’’ said primary and secondary education minister Visvesvaraya Hegde Kageri.
