The Madras High Court has reiterated that minority status, once granted to an institution, need not be renewed periodically. The court passed the order while allowing a petition by the Secretary, Loyola College (autonomous), Nungambakkam seeking the quashing of an order of the Secretary, Higher Education Department, dated October 8, 2009 restricting the status of the college as a minority educational institution to a limited period from 2007 to 2012. The institution challenged the restriction on the ground that that there was no change in the membership of the society and the constitution of the educational agency and its objects. The Bench held that the minority status once granted need not be renewed periodically.
