The incident took place in a jail in Aligarh, when some officials of the jail came in to frisk the barrack of a detainee, claiming that he is carrying a mobile phone. According to Mohd. Zakir, jail officials barged into his barrack while he was reading the Qur’ān, and insulted and used offensive words for the Qur’ān. However the jail superintendent Mr. Sanjeev Tripathi who himself was not present at the moment said the frisking was done because of the suspicion of carrying a mobile phone and called the allegations made by Zakir baseless. The incident came into light when the detainee Mohd. Zakir was taken to a court for hearing, where he divulged the information to his brother Nisaruddin. Nisaruddin reported the event to the City Mufti Maulana Mohd. Khalid Hameed who then sought strong action in this regard and called the Member of Assembly Haji Zameerullah Khan to visit the jail in order to get actual information.
However the jail superintendent has said that nothing like this has been done and there is an atmosphere of unity and brotherhood in jail, besides this special arrangements considering the month of Ramadhan have also been made for namaz, iftar and sehri.
