The fact that over 240 NEET-UG candidates who appeared for the exam at a Rajkot (Gujarat) centre, scored more than 600 marks, points to the need for a full-fledged inquiry to unearth the many lapses which seem to have happened in the conduct of the exam.

Imagine the mental state of the lakhs of candidates who toiled and burnt the midnight oil in their attempt to score the highest marks honestly in the exam, when they read these reports.

Every day, reports are emerging about alleged malpractices in the exam which need to be thoroughly probed and the culprits punished.

This is a question of trust in the entire exam system and in the government which conducts it.

A Welcome Decision by the Supreme Court

The Supreme Court imposed an interim stay recently on the directives issued by the BJP-ruled Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Madhya Pradesh governments that eateries along the Kawanriyayatra routes must display the names of their owners.

The SC issued notices to the above governments while the Ujjain municipal body had issued similar directives. The bench, however, said eateries may be required to display the kind of food they are serving, and whether they are vegetarian or non-vegetarian.

A large number of devotees travel from various places with “Kanwars” carrying holy water from the Ganga to perform “jalabhishek” of Shivilings during the Hindu calendar month of “Sharavan”. Many devotees do not consume meat during the auspicious month.

A welcome decision by the SC judges for their logical judgement.

Rising Pace of Anti-Muslim Social Media Posts

India is facing violent incidents against the members of the Muslim community. Social media is also being exploited in polarizing the young minds.

Recently two persons, including a local BJP leader, have been arrested after they posted anti-Muslim Facebook posts in the Kolar district of Karnataka. According to local reports, the Facebook post, which was reportedly uploaded on July 26, criticized Muslims on the issue of paying taxes. The alleged post read, “31st July is nearing. Please pay your taxes on time. After all your taxes are someone’s subsidy.”

The two arrested – BJP leader Navin Jain and ChetanBantia, a trader by profession – shared the posts on their respective Facebook pages, stirring anger and tension among the Muslim locality.

Eventually a large member of Muslims gathered at the Robertsonpet police station and demanded that two be arrested and apologise.

The law and order machinery should take precautionary measures to ensure that such violent and hate-filled incidents do not take place and peace may prevail in the country.
