I watched a Lok Sabha discussion on Assam violence and in one of the reports doing the rounds on TV, LK Advani said the root cause of the problem is the illegal Bangladeshi immigrants; and the question is not a communal one but is about who citizens are and who aren’t. However, I did not see any news channel highlighting the points raised by other members as one of them said, “If all Bangladeshis are to be sent back, let all Pakistanis also be sent back.” We are also aware that there was a sizable population of Muslims in Assam even after partition. Clearly they are not Bangladeshis in any sense. Perhaps the channels are not broadcasting opinion of other members and taking LK Advani as the only Indian MP.
