Admitting the petition filed by Association for Protection of Civil Rights (APCR), the Supreme Court of India issued notice to the State of Bihar and others to present report in the court within four weeks in relation to the Forbesganj brutal police firing. The plea made by APCR, alleges that the state government is protecting the police officials who resorted to firing at unarmed villagers. The non-governmental organisation also urged the court to direct the state government to pay a compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the family members of each of the deceased and Rs 5 lakh each to those injured in the police firing. A bench of Justices RM Lodha and JS Khehar issued notice to the state government, seeking its response to the plea for CBI probe into the incident. Adv Colin Gonsalves appeared as counsel for the petitioner.
The Forbesganj killing took place on June 3, 2011 when the police opened fire killing five innocent villagers including a pregnant woman and a 6-month unborn baby and left nine others severely wounded. The dispute arose between the officers of Auro Sundaram International and villagers of Bhajanpur. The horrifying video clips of jumping on the injured body of one youth by a homeguard is still available on Youtube.
