The Pot and the Kettle

Hillary Clinton’s and our SM Krishna’s discourse on how to bring in democracy in Egypt sounds like black pot and equally black kettle not calling each other black. Egyptians have had enough of US imposing the despot Mubarak on them for decades. The last thing they will want is to learn democracy from Hillaries and Clintons. Perhaps Clinton knows it and hence is projecting India as their proxy in the Egyptian arena. Has India any better credibility as a champion of secular democracy? There is no despot anywhere and especially in the Middle East who is not India’s friend. Our foreign minister has been bragging about our decades old friendship with the Egyptian people as if Egyptian masses had any say in any affairs of their country. Lately the “pragmatic” government of our Prime Minister has not endeared itself with the lovers of human rights and civil liberties by breaking bread with the janta of Myanmar. Even the release of Aung San Suu Kyi after solitary confinement for 15 years was hailed by India as a right step taken by the Myanmar Janta.
