The debate about the Allahabad verdict on Babri Masjid dispute is going on. But it is the foregone conclusion that the parties will go to the Supreme Court. This dispute has done unparalleled harm to the communal situation in the country. The whole nation wants that the court should arrange day-to-day hearing and expedite the matter by delivering its final judgement. Everybody feels that this vexing problem should be settled once for all.

The controversy was manufactured by communalist politicians to serve their vested interests. It is definitely not a Hindu-Muslim question. Actually it is a question of justice versus injustice, hard facts versus mythology and manufactured faith versus rule of law.

The Supreme Court has to decide whether any credence can be given to the claim that Ram Chandraji, who was not a historical figure and regarded as an incarnation of God by many Hindus, and said to have been born some nine lakh years back, was born precisely on the piece of land under the central dome of Babri Masjid. It has also to decide whether the Babri Masjid which was constructed in 1528 was built against the tenets and established traditions of Islam. The court should also examine whether the people who organised illegal assembly near Babri Masjid and finally committed the heinous crime of demolition of 500-year old historical mosque in broad daylight should be rewarded with Masjid land fully or partially. The Muslims had been in uninterrupted possession of the Masjid and the adjoining land from 1928 to 1949 and regular namaz was going on there. The court should decide whether the surreptitious placing of idols in 1949 entitles the perpetrators of this crime to two-thirds of the land in question.

It is RSS, BJP and their affiliates which whipped up pseudo-religious frenzy, poisoned the minds of large sections of society and made them believe that Ram Chandraji was born exactly on the piece of land under the central dome of the Masjid. The fact is that there are 10 to 12 spots in Ayodhya which are claimed to be the janmasthan (birthplace) of Ram Chandraji. The Supreme Court should decide whether a recently manufactured myth should be given precedence over solid facts.

Great deal of harm has already been done to social cohesion. Political parties, social organisations, opinion makers and well-wishers of the country must think about the ways and means to restore inter-community trust. In future there should not be any room for such disputes in national life which are created to spoil the whole atmosphere and hinder the progress of the country.

As regards Muslims, their attitude towards this dispute has been commendable as they always avoided any confrontationist approach and from day one said that they would accept the final judgement of the court even if it goes against them. At the same time they have stressed that they are not ready to be cowed down and will not willingly submit to the demand of turning the House of God into a house of idol worship.
