Maulana Wahiduddin Khan will be given the prestigious Rajiv Gandhi National Sadbhawana Award for his “outstanding contribution towards the promotion of communal harmony, peace and goodwill”. The award, which was instituted to commemorate the lasting contribution made by the former Prime Minister, carries a citation and a cash award of Rs five lakhs. It will be given on August 20, the birthday of Rajiv Gandhi. But his proximity to BJP leader L.K. Advani has reportedly evoked mixed reactions from the Muslim community. Tasleem Rehmani of the Muslim Political Council was quoted as expressing his displeasure. “Despite Maulana being a great scholar, I would say he has compromised a bit too much for the sake of communal harmony.” Another leader said, “The Congress may be trying to appease the Muslim community by choosing a Muslim for the award. But by choosing a person known as the ‘Muslim friend of Advani’, it has made a mistake.”
