Nineteen out of 28 Urdu schools in Bokaro district of Jharkhand are closing to impasse as there are no teachers for the subject. Data suggest that as many as 252 seats of Urdu teachers are vacant but there is no initiative from the state government to fill the same. Consequently, the Urdu schools’ as well as students’ fate are hanging in balance. The district has around 800 Primary and Middle schools, 28 among them are said to be enjoying Urdu medium status on paper. But the ground reality tells another story. Urdu speaking people constitute 33 per cent i.e. around 6 lakh of the total population in the district and Urdu is the second state language in the state. This is not a lone story. Urdu is treated in the same manner in almost every state as well as by the Centre.
