Abu Umamah Sudaiye bin Ajlan Bahili relates that the Messenger of Allah said: “Allah likes most two drops, one of tears due to fear of Allah and a drop of blood shed for the sake of Allah; and two marks, one received (i.e. wounded) in the cause of Allah, and a mark received in the course of discharging an obligation commanded by Allah.”

(Tirmidhi)

A Muslim should lead a composite life of love and fear of God. If love exceeds fear, he doesn’t feel hesitation in committing trivial evils and he forgets that God is even Jabbar and Qahhar. Those who shed tears owing to fear of Allah are in His good books. If a man commits a sin and then sheds tears, his deed is erased from the Book of Records.

Sacrifice in the cause of Islam is a noble act, be it in the form of money, time or physical labour. It elevates the status of man in the eyes of God. It also paves the way for his eternal success on the Day of Judgement. Those who participate in the cause of Islam and sustain injuries are believers in the true sense. Allah loves the blood they shed if it is aimed only to seek the pleasure of Allah, and not for mundane popularity. If the goal is not to seek the pleasure of Allah, the so-called “martyr” is doomed to failure on the Day of Judgement. Every noble deed of a Muslim is preserved with Allah.
