Heated discussions have started immediately after BJP MP Dr. Harsh Vardhan expressed his opposition to the so-called ‘sex education‘. The title chosen by NDTV, for example, reads ‘Is India ready for 21st century?’, implying obviously in this context the urgent and un-curtailed need for sex education as opined by ‘liberals’ and ‘modern thinkers’. These thinkers in most cases have ‘narrow perspective of social life’, adopted blindly from the west.

A plain thinking person wonders why after all in a majority of schools today, the uniform has to be a replica of a rotten culture? Are not our girls decent, good looking and smart in local dress of their choice? If somebody thinks that local dress is imposing, it should be noted that nobody has a right to impose an alien dress as well. Leave the choice in that case to individuals in the spirit of ‘unity in diversity’ and ‘tolerance’.

It is high time seniors in colleges also thought reasonably and realistically. At the other end, no one has to go for a ‘vasectomy to avoid rape’. What is the point in having live-in relations, going to discos for hip-hops, even drinking; and when something goes wrong complaining, lodging FIRs, fighting cases, etc., shaming themselves, their families and the society?

Do 21st century norms apply only in respect of students being well informed about intricacies of ‘sex’? Does ‘21st century India’ deserve more reasonable legislature, administration and judiciary, better than taking immediate suo motto cognitions of crimes and corruption based on news in media or even rumour, when convenient, while crimes committed by officials and their machinery in private as well as public knowledge go unnoticed for years together, when not convenient?

Is it ‘law taking its own course’ or ‘free for all’?

What about ‘welfare’ and ‘service’ to people’ that our leaders talk about all the time before elections? We hear about ‘achche din’ while even the commoner’s travel means for over a century in our country, railways are not spared increase of cost.

We hear about some politicians as well as police officials involved in rapes. We hear about orders to dig rival judges’ records for loopholes to prevent their assuming top offices. We hear about power cuts, water shortages everywhere, about poor becoming poorer and rich richer.

We see and hear about leaders of all hues visiting Raj-Ghat, the eternal resting place of ‘Father of the Nation’, none showing respect to his ‘principles or ideals’ in any form.

Since over 65 years of ‘freedom’, which has helped only the crony capitalists inland and outside, we hear claims of sacrifices from every corner, even from collaborators of the imperialists. Truth, tolerance and nonviolence has become a joke even in this land that boasted of giving birth to Buddha and Mahavir since centuries.

Can’t our media guide the public on what should be their choices in ‘21st century’, whether living in ‘chaos and anarchy’ or ’peace and harmony’; whether going forward in history, learning from past or to running back to destruction like so many nations in history?
