The Tata Institute of Social Sciences has recently conducted a survey in Maharashtra only to find out that 25.4 per cent Muslims are in jail because they do not have money to carry on their hearings in the courts. The report claims that around three thousand Muslims are locked in different jails of the state; 42 per cent among them have no charge against them. Raising the issue in the Assembly on 3 April, MLA Abu AsimAzmi said the government should put the issue on fast track and release soon the people who have no criminal charges. The Apex Court has earlier ordered the government to conclude the matters soon and release those who are not charge-sheeted. The report also claims that no Muslim in jail has any criminal charge.
