A study on the status of the education of the girl child has revealed that 29 per cent of the respondents in the city are unaware about the Right to Education Act, which states that education is a basic right of every child in the country. The survey was conducted by CRY volunteers in slums/resettlement colonies in the five cities of Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai and Bangalore to study the prevalence of barriers to education of the girl child among the lower income groups. Approximately 480 households were covered by the survey. In Delhi, more than half the respondents lacked awareness about schemes for girl children. “About 29 per cent respondents said they knew children in their locality who were out of school. About 30 per cent respondents said they knew that girl children were out of school in their locality.”
“The report on education of the girl child clearly brings out an urgent need to address the issue at all levels,” Yogita Verma, Director Volunteer Action, CRY, said.
