A Cairo court on February 2 acquitted 61 supporters of former president of Egypt Mohamed Morsi and Al Jazeera cameraman Mohamed Badr, who were tried on charges of staging riot acts in central Cairo’s Ramses Square last July, reports said citing a judicial source on February 2. The verdict was reached on grounds of insufficient evidence. The acquitted will be discharged from prison even if prosecutors appeal the case. For his part, head of East Cairo prosecution Wael Hussein reportedly said that the prosecution will file an appeal against the verdict within two weeks. The announcement of the verdict was reportedly met with jubilation inside the courtroom, where some of the defendants chanted “long live justice” and “God is great.”
