7 Muslims Acquitted After 11 Years

Seven Muslim youths arrested after the Students Islamic Movement of India was banned in 2001were acquitted of all charges on 11 April. All the seven persons remained in jail for a period of six months and were subsequently granted bail.

Seven Muslim youths arrested after the Students Islamic Movement of India was banned in 2001were acquitted of all charges on 11 April. All the seven persons remained in jail for a period of six months and were subsequently granted bail.They were charged with the sections 116, 121, 121A, 153, 117, 120B, 124B and 124A of Indian Penal Code. The names of the acquitted persons are Md. Sules, Md. Asim, Md. Sharique, Md. Iqbal Ansari, Md. Ahmad, Md. Ashfaque, Md. Imran. All of them had stated in court that they have never been associated with the organisation. Among them, Ashfaque was president of the local body of BJP at the time of his arrest. Scores of youths were arrested from different parts of the country after the Union Government banned SIMI in 2001.
