A district court judge who had recently questioned the “magical powers” of the Special Staff of Delhi Police and ordered registration of FIR against eight policemen for wrongly implicating two men is now worried about retaliation. Fearing threats to him and his family, he has now written to the Delhi High Court asking for “protection.” The letter written by the fast track court judge of Karkardooma courts is addressed to the Registrar General of the Delhi High Court. It explains in detail the basis of his apprehensions, and vulnerability of any man against ‘mighty’ policemen. The move comes a few days after his judgment that raised grave questions over the extraordinary powers accorded to special police establishments. The letter says some Delhi Police officials have “hatched a conspiracy” to teach him “a lesson for daring to pass such an order”. There is also a probability that an offensive could be launched against family members of the judicial officer, presently residing in Uttar Pradesh, the letter states.

In his judgment, the judge had criticised the East district Special Staff policemen for implicating two men – Salim and Salig – in a false robbery case in 2004 that led to a five-year jail term for the duo. The judge had directed the Deputy Police Commissioner of East district to lodge an FIR against the eight policemen involved. The judge, who granted freedom to the two accused, had also issued contempt notices to the policemen for picking up the duo in a manner that violated Supreme Court guidelines, as also for keeping them in illegal detention for eight to nine days.
