“A Day when the wrong-doer will bite his hands, saying: ‘Would that I had stood by the Messenger! Woe is me! Would that I had not taken such a one for a friend! He led me astray from the Admonition that had come to me. Satan proved to be a great betrayer of man.’ And the Messenger will say: ‘My Lord, my own people had made this Qur’ān an object of laughter.’”
(Al Qur’ān 25:27-30)
In this physical world, wrong-doers always tend to do mischiefs and reject the Divine Message and the Day of Judgement. But on the Promised Day, asserts the Qur’ān, they would simply regret their wrong-doings and the folly of following the promptings of Satan. It is on that Day that they would realise the authenticity of the Message the Qur’ān gives and the enmity of Satan.
That ‘Satan proved to be a great betrayer of man’ may be a part of the unbeliever’s lament. Alternatively, it may be God’s response to the unbeliever’s statement, in which case the appropriate translation would be: “Satan is indeed a betrayer of man.”
On the Day of Judgement, Allah’s Messenger Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be to him) would say to the Lord that his own people had made the Qur’ān an object of laughter. The unbelievers did not regard the Qur’ān as worthy of due attention. They neither accepted the Qur’ān, nor allowed themselves to be influenced by it. They considered the Qur’ān to be a delirious discourse and made it the target of their ridicule and mockery.
