Kashmir Singh, an Indian jawan, was arrested in Pakistan in 1973 on charges of spying and sentenced to death by an Army court. He has been released after spending 35 years in Central Jail, Lahore. The caretaker Human Rights Minister of Pakistan, Ansar Burney ran into Kashmir Singh during a recent visit to Lahore jail. He took up the case with President Pervez Musharraf, who pardoned him.
With democracy on the anvil in Pakistan, is Kashmir Singh’s release an indication of improving Indo-Pak relations? Or is it just another piece meal initiative by Pervez Musharraf to prove his humanitarian ways. Whatever may the case, if it means more Indians getting released from Pakistan jails, it is a welcome move.
