Though the UPA deserves applaud for heading to form the government once again, its victory cannot be construed as vindication of good governance.  Several factors contributed to UPA’s win by default.  The main opposition party BJP was seen as wilfully targeting Dr. Manmohan Singh as the weakest Prime Minister ever.  This apart, the projection of Narendra Modi as the Prime Ministerial material led to the disenchantment to the people at large, let alone in the NDA camp. The erosion of Muslim vote to Samajwadi Party due to Kalyan Singh factor left a vacuum for the Congress. The Left parties which withdrew support to the UPA over the nuclear deal have failed to project the issue sufficiently in the election campaign.  The U.S. administration might be having the last laugh to see the pro-American man at the helm of affairs once again.
