Afzal Imam, a ward councillor from Patna City, has been elected mayor of Patna Municipal Corporation (PMC). Imam defeated former mayor Sanjay Kumar by 24 votes in the mayoral elections held on June 3. Vinay Kumar Pappu won the deputy mayor seat defeating Roop Narayan Mehta by 12 votes. Both the newly elected mayor and deputy mayor had the support of United Parishad Morcha constituted by a major section of the PMC ward councillors who had ousted both Sanjay Kumar and Santosh Kumar Mehta from the posts of mayor and deputy mayor respectively through a no-confidence motion. In a three-cornered contest for the post of Mayor, Imam garnered 43 votes against Kumar’s 19 votes. For the post deputy mayor, Pappu garnered 41 votes in a straight contest against Mehta who secured 29 votes. Of the 72 ward councillors, the lone absentee in the mayor’s election was Tota Chaudhary. One vote was rejected!
