A large number of youth taking to alcoholism in India is a cause for concern as it deters them from donating blood, said Justice V. Rama Subramanian of Madras High Court. Speaking at a blood donation camp at Harveypatti organised by the Democratic Youth Federation, the judge said, “India requires 4 crore units of blood, whereas we get only 40 lakh units of blood from donors. The 40 lakh units of blood are only 10 per cent of the demand. Youth should stop consuming alcohol and focus on contributing to noble causes like blood donation.” The judge further hailed the people of Gujarat for being significant blood donors. “The people of Gujarat donate 7.65 lakh units of blood every year. This amounts to around 13 per cent of the blood donated in the nation,” he pointed out.
