The FIFA World Cup should have been a celebration of global unity. It could have been a tournament where nations meet on a level playing field and leave their politics at home. However, the manner in which the host nation, the United States is treating the Iranian football team, is nothing short of appalling, disgusting and unbecoming of a nation that boasts of being a global superpower and the greatest democracy in the world. The Iranian national football team’s participation has become a case study in how petty thinking by those in the highest echelons of power can intrude, distort and ultimately undermine the spirit of international sport.
Iran Team Not Welcome
In an open display of cheap vindictive politics, the United States government chalked out some bizarre arrangements to impede and create obstacles in the Iranian football team’s participation. Unlike other teams, the Iranian footballers have been forced to camp in Tijuana, Mexico. So, for their matches in the USA the team has to cross the Mexican border and enter the US. Why on earth did the US have to do such a thing? Did they think the Iranians were a security threat or the American administration wanted to show the Americans (who really don’t care about football, they play soccer) that this is how we treat those who dare to stand up to our hegemony.
The Americans used every cheap trick up their sleeve. Iranian officials and support staff faced visa hurdles with many team members unable to secure entry into the United States in time for the matches. Under international sporting obligations the Iranian players were granted visas but other team officials could not secure visas. Naturally, this spoiled the team’s preparation and coordination.
The Iranian team is permitted to enter the United States only shortly before matches and must leave soon after. This was another tactic to humiliate a guest by the host country. Iran’s football federation has formally filed a complaint with FIFA. But it appears to be a lost cause as FIFA is not in a position to do anything meaningful.
Iranian Fans Also
The American pettiness also extended to thousands of Iranian fans who wanted to travel to the US for supporting their national team. The presence of passionate supporters from across the globe supporting their national teams is one of the most cherished aspects of the World Cup. The Americans under the garb of visa restrictions and heightened scrutiny did not give the Iranian team the chance to enjoy, relish and cherish the hospitality and support of the host country.
The American administration is still knee-deep into a sanctions mentality and wants to extend this to the realm of sports. This is extremely damaging to the field of sports which basically symbolises the quest and celebration of human excellence. By stooping to such pettiness, the Americans have belittled whatever little stature they had and showed that they are sore losers (having miserably lost the war against Iran).
FIFA’s Role
Unfortunately, FIFA’s role in this entire situation left much to be desired. As the governing body of world football, FIFA should have walked the talk and insisted on zero-compromise on the principles of neutrality, inclusivity and equal treatment.
While FIFA has pioneered strict regulations in the game of football regarding gestures, slogans and personal conduct, it has not been able to muster the courage to confront host nations for rogue behaviour. FIFA has a handicap. Although it is the official international body that governs all aspects of football, it remains dependent on host countries for conducting the matches. Sometimes the policies may not be in the spirit of the game, but marketing and financial constraints seem to have tied the hands of FIFA. The result, teams such as Iran have to face the brunt of the host nation’s vote-bank politics and narrow-minded mindset.
Sports and Politics
This is not the first-time sports and politics got intertwined on the global arena. The Olympic boycotts of 1980 and 1984 showed how Cold War rivalries could impact sport and become an extension of geopolitics. The 1980 Moscow Olympics were boycotted by the US and over 60 countries in protest against the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. Similarly, the Soviet Union and its allies retaliated by boycotting the 1984 Los Angeles Games. However, in the present case, there was no provocation for the US to display such unacceptable and appalling behaviour as the host nation.
In fact, with negotiations that were about to become successful, hosting the Iranian football team in a dignified way would have sent a strong signal of peace and goodwill by America and somewhat raised its diminishing stature among the league of nations.
America Dishonours FIFA Pledge
When a country bids to host the FIFA World Cup, it undertakes a series of formal commitments that go far beyond merely organising matches. It pledges to ensure non-discrimination, guaranteeing equal treatment to all participating teams, officials and supporters regardless of nationality, religion or political context. It is also expected to provide non-discriminatory visa access, enabling players, staff, media and fans to enter the country for the tournament. The host must ensure free and safe movement within its territory, allowing teams to train, travel and prepare under normal conditions.
Equally important is the commitment to uphold political neutrality, ensuring that the tournament is not used as a platform for geopolitical signalling or selective targeting. The principle of equal sporting conditions requires that no team be placed at a logistical or administrative disadvantage.
In addition, the host is expected to facilitate broad access for international fans and media, preserving the global character of the event. Finally, all these obligations are anchored in compliance with FIFA statutes and human rights commitments, which emphasise inclusivity, fairness and universality as the foundational ethos of the World Cup.
Even a cursory reading of the conditions of this pledge shows how the US has completely dishonoured these commitments. In one of his books, renowned writer and dramatist G.B. Shaw’s titled a chapter – “How Wealth Accumulates and Men Decay”. For the 2023-2026 commercial cycle, FIFA is on track to bring in a historic $13 billion in total revenue. However, this will come at a great cost to human dignity and the spirit of fair play. FIFA wins but football loses.
