Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) has accused the Aligarh Municipal Corporation of forcibly occupying a 3.8-acre university plot estimated to be worth around Rs 500 crore, after the civic body fenced the property and installed a signboard.
AMU V-C Prof. Naima Khatoon described the action as unwarranted and said the university would challenge it before the Supreme Court. She said AMU had legal records dating back more than a century to establish ownership and questioned the absence of any prior notice from the civic body.
According to AMU, the disputed Riding Field land has belonged to the university since its acquisition on June 13, 1925, under the Land Acquisition Act, 1894. The university said it possesses archival, revenue and legal records supporting its claim.AMU also alleged tampering with its revenue records in 1992 and said it sought correction before the competent authority in March 2025. The dispute remains pending before the SDM, Kol.
The Corporation rejected AMU’s claim. Municipal Commissioner Prem Prakash Meena said civic records show the land has belonged to the corporation for 40 years. He said the civic body plans urban development projects on the property.The district administration said it would issue notices to both sides and determine ownership after examining documents and records.
The dispute follows earlier clashes over AMU land, including the civic body’s 2025 takeover of 41 bighas in Bhamola Maasi village.
