Aligarh Muslim University Students Union held protest in Aligarh against the arrest of scribe Syed Ahmed Kazmi in connection with the bombing of an Israeli diplomat’s vehicle in Delhi. The students marched to District Collector and handed over a memorandum addressed to the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, claiming that the 50-year-old Kazmi was arrested on the basis of “concocted” charges. They alleged that it has become an “ominous” trend to pick up “innocent” Muslims on charges of involvement in terror activities. The memorandum claimed that there are more than 716 cases of “false implication and encounters” against Muslim youth in Uttar Pradesh alone registered in the National Human Rights Commission during 1993-2009. Kazmi was arrested on Mar 7. The police maintain that the bombing was a case of “international terrorism”, and Kazmi has helped the bomber conduct reconnaissance of the Israeli embassy.
