It is hard to imagine how innocuous firecrackers can be used to hurt the sentiments of Muslims. But the fact is that in Azamgarh district firecrackers have been used to escalate communal tensions. It so happened when some people of the locality found the Qur’ānic verses inscribed on the papers used to manufacture firecrackers. When the firecrackers blew, the half burnt papers had the verses of the Qur’ān. When the local shopkeeper was asked as to where he has brought the firecrackers, he said they have come from Banaras. The packing bears the following address, “Hindustan Fireworks, Beniyan, in front of Telephone Exchange, Varanasi 1.” Local Muslims believe that such acts are particularly targeted to hurt their sentiments.
