Criticising Delhi Police for its ‘slipshod approach’ and ‘casualness,’ which failed to ensure ‘minimum standard of proof required in criminal trial,’ the Delhi court acquitted two men, Mirza Nisar Husain  and Mohammad Ali Bhatt who had been sentenced to death by a trial court in the 1996 Lajpat Nagar bomb blast case.

Thursday (November 22) was the day of joy for the family of Nisar. Padshah Begum, Nisar’s mother said, “For us it is the moment of joy. From day one we knew he (Nisar) is innocent and his acquittal by the Delhi court has proved us right.” The past sixteen years had been very hard for the family. “My husband passed away in early 1995, the next year my two sons were detained without any reason. My younger son discontinued studies and started working at a private school to keep the family going and fight the legal battle,” she said. The family hopes that he will be acquitted in the case filed against him in Jaipur as well. “He never visited Jaipur, still a case was fabricated against him,” says Nighat, Nisar’s younger sister.
