A Malaysian court postponed the start of opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim’s sodomy trial to next month amid unresolved technicalities. Anwar was charged in August 2008 with allegedly sodomising a 24-year-old male former aide. He faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted of sodomy, a crime in this Muslim-majority country. The Federal Court on scheduled the trial to begin on February 2, nearly a week after it was supposed to start on January 25. The delay is meant to enable the court to rule first on Anwar’s appeal to force the prosecution to provide him with medical and camera evidence ahead of the trial, said Anwar’s lawyer, Sankara Nair. It is the second time that Anwar, a former deputy prime minister, has been accused of sodomy. He has already spent six years in prison between 1998 and 2004.
