Anwar Ibrahim urged his country to continue in the International Monitoring Team (IMT) in Mindanao to facilitate and broker the talks between the Philippine government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front. He disagreed with his country’s decision to pull out of the peacekeeping efforts. Ibrahim said the quest and accompaniment for peace must be paramount even if there may have been compelling reasons for Kuala Lumpur to think about pulling out as the peace negotiation has continued to drag and some initial agreements on the framework of the talks had been reneged upon. He was responding to the appeal of The Mindanao Peaceweavers, the broadest coalition of civil society peace networks in the island, who wrote to Ibrahim saying that leaving the IMT, or even a hint of downsizing Malaysia’s presence has released a deep anxiety among the people. And such anxiety can lead to hostilities.
