The UPSC has knocked out Arabic from the list of optional languages of Civil Services Examination.Arabic was its part since the beginning of examinations during the British era. Allama Abdullah Yusuf Ali(1872-1953) was an able administrator of the British regime and a renowned scholar who wrote a commentary to the Holy Qur’ān, which is widely used even today. In 1894, he scored 7th rank in Indian Civil Services Examination, which is the predecessor of the present I.A.S. For more than one century, Arabic has enjoyed the status of an optional language in ICS or IAS. Being an international language, Arabic deserves a better consideration and treatment.
