Almost all the eminent archaeologists have rejected the baseless claim that there was any temple on the disputed site. The Indian Journal of Archaeology mentions a report on Ayodhya and its surroundings. The report clearly says that during the period in which Ramchandraji was supposed to be born there was no human habitation in Ayodhya.
The famous English weekly Sunday, in its March 27-April 2, 1988 issue, published the results of the excavations conducted by former Directors Generals of Archaeological Survey of India, Mr. B.P. Lal and Mr. K.N. Dixit. The report clearly refutes the charge that the Babri Masjid was constructed after demolishing a temple. Prof. K.V. Saundra Rajan, former Additional Director General of A.S.I., who was also involved in Ayodhya excavations, holds the same view. Prof. B.N. Mishra is also of the same opinion. The Indian Archaeological Report of 1969-70 also bears testimony to this fact. The Archaeological Survey of India reports that there was no human habitation in and around Ayodhya during Gupta period. (The India Journal of Archaeology, 1967-77). These reports clearly refute the baseless charge that Babri Masjid was constructed after demolishing a temple.
