Around 100 families were displaced after the Assam government conducted an eviction drive in Bhakatgaon in Samaguri area. Officials said the operation targeted 38 bighas of government land that had been occupied since the 1990s. District Commissioner Devashish Sharma said most families left after receiving notices. He said the remaining families left on the day of the drive, which allowed the administration to clear the area.
The district administration said the process will continue in other parts of Nagaon. Officials listed several locations where the next phases of eviction will take place. These areas include Salanibari, Ahom Gaon, Tuktuki, Roumari Beach, Mairadhwaj, Bechamari, Shalmabari and AkharbariGelekni Beach. The government said the aim is to clear the “encroached land”.
Eviction drives have increased since the HimantaBiswaSarma government took office in 2021. These actions have affected Bengali speaking Muslim families in many districts. Critics say the pattern has created fear among vulnerable groups. On Nov. 3, the chief minister said the government would continue these drives. He said illegal Miyas would not get peace under his administration. The term Miya is widely used for Bengali speaking Muslims in Assam. Many have reclaimed the term in recent years.
Families in the affected areas said they had lived on the land for decades. They said the eviction has left them uncertain about shelter and livelihood.
