na tūzamīñkeliyehai na āsmāñkeliye

jahāñhaitereliyetūnahīñjahāñkeliye

You are neither for the earth nor for the heaven:

The world is for you, and not you for the world.

ye aql o dilhaiñsharar shola-e-mohabbatke

voḳhār-o-ḳhaskeliyehai ye nīstāñkeliye

The sparks Reason and Heart are shed of the flame of Love:

That one to burn the straw, this one for burning the field of reeds.

maqām-e-parvarish-e-āh-o-lālahai ye chaman

na sair-e-gul keliyehai na āshiyāñkeliye

This garden is for painful strains:

Neither for enjoying the roses nor for making a nest.

rahegāraavī o niil o furātmeñkabtak

tirāsafīna ki hai bahr-e-be-karāñkeliye

How long, while your ship remains in Ravi, Nile and Euphrates?

– When it is meant for the Ocean, which knows no bounds.

nishān-e-rāhdikhāte the jo sitāroñ ko

tarasga.ehaiñkisīmard-e-rāh-dāñkeliye

Once who were beacons to the brightest stars,

Have long been awaiting a guide to show them the way now.

nigahbulandsuḳhandil-navāzjaañpur-soz

yahīhairaḳht-e-safarmīr-e-kārvāñkeliye

High ambition, winsome speech, a passionate soul –

This is all the luggage for a leader of the Caravan.

zarāsībaatthīandesha-e-ajam ne use

baḌhādiyāhaifaqatzeb-e-dāstāñkeliye

It was a plain and simple truth but the imagination of the Persian mind

Has confounded it with the poetic licence.

mire gulūmeñhaiiknaġhmajibra.īl-āshob

sambhālkarjiserakkhāhailā-makāñkeliye

I am saving a song for the Place-less Realm –

A song that could shake even the trusty Gabriel.

tū ai asīr-e-makāñlā-makāñ se duurnahīñ

vojalva-gāh tire ḳhāk-dāñ se duurnahīñ

O Prisoner of Space! You are not far from the Placeless Realm –

That Audience Hall is not far away from your planet.

vomarġh-zār ki bīm-e-ḳhizāñnahīñjismeñ

ġhamīñ na ho ki tire āshiyāñ se duurnahīñ

Grieve not, for a meadow that faces no threat

from the Autumn, is not far away from your nest.

ye haiḳhulāsa-e-ilm-e-qalandarī ki hayāt

ḳhadañg-e-jastahailekinkamāñ se duurnahīñ

The gist of all Gnostic knowledge is merely this:

That life is an arrow spent and yet from the bow it is not too far!

fazātirīmah o parvīñ se haizarāaage

qadamuThā ye maqāmāsmāñ se duurnahīñ

Your station lies a little ahead of all the stars and Pleiades:

Move on, for it is not a long way from the skies.

kahe na rāh-numā se ki chhoḌ de mujh ko

ye baatrāh-rav-e-nukta-dāñ se duurnahīñ

Lest he asks the guide to let him be!

It would be no surprise from a traveller who thinks too much.
