Bal-e-Jibril-072

ne mohra baaqī ne mohra-bāzī

jiitā hai ‘rūmī’ haarā hai ‘rāzī’

Over the tussle of heart and head

Rumi has won and Rizi fled.

raushan hai jām-e-jamshed ab tak

shāhī nahīñ hai be-shīsha-bāzī

Still bowl of Jamshid is alive,

Without guile kingship cannot thrive.

dil hai musalmāñ merā na terā

tū bhī namāzī maiñ bhī namāzī

Both you and I aren’t Muslims true,

Though we say the prayers due.

maiñ jāntā huuñ anjām us kā

jis mārke meñ mullā hoñ ġhāzī

I know the end of wrangle well

Where mullahs at each other yell.

turkī bhī shīrīñ taazī bhī shīrīñ

harf-e-mohabbat turkī na taazī

Turkish and Arabic both are sweet,

For talk of Love all tongues are meet.

aazar kā pesha ḳhārā-tarāshī

kār-e-ḳhalīlāñ ḳhārā-gudāzī

The breed of Azar idols make,

But Friends of God these idols break.

tū zindagī hai pā.endagī hai

baaqī hai jo kuchh sab ḳhāk-bāzī

You are alive and live for aye

The rest is all a play with clay.

Bal-e-Jibril-073

garm-e-fuġhāñ hai jaras uTh ki gayā qāfila

vaa.e vo rah-rau ki hai muntazir-e-rāhila

Arise! The bugle calls! It is time to leave!

Woe be to the traveller who still awaits!

terī tabī.at hai aur terā zamāna hai aur

tere muāfiq nahīñ ḳhānqahī silsila

The confines of a monastery suit thee not—

The times have changed, thou seest, and so hast thou.

dil ho ġhulām-e-ḳhirad yā ki imām-e-ḳhirad

sālik-e-rah hoshiyār saḳht hai ye marhala

Thorny is the path, O seeker of salvation!

Whether thy heart is the slave or the master of reason.

us kī ḳhudī hai abhī shām-o-sahar meñ asiir

gardish-e-daurāñ kā hai jis kī zabāñ par gila

The selfhood of one who bemoans all change,

Is yet a prisoner of time, shackled by days and nights.

tere nafas se huī ātish-e-gul tez-tar

murġh-e-chaman hai yahī terī navā kā sila

O songbird! Thy song is well rewarded when

It infuses fire into the rose’s bloom.
