Members of Sharjah’s Sharjah Consultative Council (SCC) have urged the authorities to ban old men from marrying young women. The issue was raised during the 13th session of the current council. The session was chaired by Saif Al Suwaidi, Chairman of SCC, and attended by Colonel Dr Abdullah Sahoh, Director-General of SNRD, and other officials. The discussion also focused on the phenomenon of fake marriages between national men and foreign women who pay a lot of money to acquire UAE passports. The annual problem of pilgrims getting stranded in the country also came up for discussion. One member expressed his concern about the issue of stateless citizens carrying no identification documents. Answering the queries raised by the SCC members, Colonel Dr Sahoh said fake marriage between UAE nationals and foreign women is a crime. The offenders will have to be penalised. The SNRD does not approve of offering passports to foreign wives easily. Each case will be investigated until the SNRD is satisfied that the marriage is genuine.
