Bangladesh’s Chief Adviser, Prof. Muhammad Yunus expressed his “deep appreciation” to Turkish President Tayyip Erdoğan and First Lady EmineErdoğan for their unwavering support to the Rohingya community sheltered in Bangladesh, said an Anadolu report. Yunus made the remarks during a meeting in Dhaka with a five-member Turkish parliamentary delegation led by Mehmet Akif Yılmaz, Chairperson of the Türkiye-Bangladesh Parliamentary Friendship Group.
The delegation visited Rohingya camps in south-eastern Cox’s Bazar to review the humanitarian efforts of Turkish institutions and NGOs, including the operations of a Turkish field hospital.
Since Aug. 2017, Bangladesh has been hosting nearly 1.3 million Rohingya refugees in Cox’s Bazar district, most of whom fled persecution and a military crackdown in Myanmar.
“The plight of the Rohingya remains one of the most tragic humanitarian crises of our time. These people are suffering simply because they are Muslims and have been stripped of their citizenship,” Yunus said.
During the meeting, both sides explored avenues to enhance cooperation in trade, investment, and humanitarian initiatives.
“Since taking on this responsibility, I have worked to further deepen our close relations with Türkiye,” Yunus added, commending President Erdoğan and the First Lady for their “steadfast support and solidarity with Bangladesh, particularly in humanitarian and development cooperation.”
