Saffron derives its name from the Arabic word Zaafraan (meaning orange in colour) and it is one of the most expensive spices in the world. It is often termed as golden spice because of its enormous health benefits. Besides being used to spice up the aroma of the food or other culinary purposes, it is primarily used to treat varying health problems that the human body faces. It is considered a blood purifier and hence it is extremely beneficial and effective in kidney, bladder and liver disorders. It is often said that old people who constantly forget things can be cured of the problem by rubbing a little saffron on their forehead.

Saffron is suitable for stomach related disorders and helps in fighting indigestion. It coats the membranes of the stomach and colon which soothes the gastrointestinal colic and acidity. It is often said to be effective in fighting depression, asthma, insomnia, etc. A pinch of saffron taken with warm milk at night helps in fighting insomnia. It cures gum related problems as well. Massaging the gums with saffron helps in reducing soreness and inflammation of the mouth and the tongue. Among women, the blood loss caused due to their periods is controlled significantly by the consumption of saffron. During pregnancies saffron has a magical effect on both the mother and the foetus by maintaining and keeping the body temperature normal.

Besides, saffron increases the blood supplies to the inborn high which results in the birth of a healthy child. It helps in relieving inflammation of arthritis as well. Saffron also provides relief from joint pains. It is very helpful for athletes as it eases fatigue and muscle inflammation by helping the tissues to get rid of lactic acid which gets built up after strenuous exercise.
