Nigel Cawthorne, an Anglo-American author based in London, has become the first person to release a book about the missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 just 70 days after last contact was made. The Mystery, which claims that the plane was shot down during a military exercise that was taking place in the South China Sea at the time – involving the US and Thailand, as well as personnel from China, Japan, Indonesia and others – went on sale in Australia on 20 May.
Accusing the authorities of a cover-up, the book consists of eye-witness testimony from New Zealand oil rig worker Mike McKay, who said he saw a burning plane crash into the sea. Cawthorne claims another black box was dropped into the Indian Ocean to divert search efforts away from the real crash site.
