Sources from Saudi Aramco have said that the bodies of unburied victims of the 2007 Al-Hawiya gas pipeline fire will finally be laid to rest following a fatwa from the Senior Ulema Council (CSU) permitting non-Muslims to be buried alongside Muslims. The decision to permit the burial of non-Muslims in the same graveyard as Muslims has been reached, the sources said, due to the difficulty in identifying the bodies of the victims. The fire took the lives of 34 persons of Asian nationalities, three of whom were identifiable, and a number of Saudis. Identified bodies were given burials at the time, while the remaining victims were charred beyond recognition. The blaze at the pipeline around 30km from the Al-Hawiya gas plant in the Eastern Province reportedly occurred during routine maintenance work.
