German politicians are proposing a full ban on burqa, the face-veil. Many German states have already banned hijab in schools. Lawmakers from both Social Democratic Party and Christian Democratic Party have expressed opinions in support of the French ban and the need to follow suit in Germany.
The Italian parliament is considering a ban on the face-veil similar to the one proposed in France, Interior Minister Roberto Maroni said.
The issue is already in debate in Egypt. Female students at Cairo University are defying religious and state efforts to ban the controversial niqab from schools and colleges. A blessing in disguise of the verdict by Sheikh Tantavi against niqab is that it is gaining in popularity, even in universities. The Sheikh and his institution Al-Azhar is getting bad name and becoming unpopular even in the eyes of practising Muslims.
However, Prime Minister of Sweden, Fredrik Reinfeldt, and other political leaders there have already stated that they are not in favour of legislation in Sweden banning the burqa.
