Calicut will soon be known as a city to have the largest mosque in India. Plans for its construction have started and its model is being worked upon. The cost for the construction of this majestic mosque will be provided by the Non-Residential Indians (NRIs) living in the Gulf, said Mr. Hakeem Azhari, Joint Secretary of Cultural Centre, Calicut, Kerala. The mosque spreads across 2,50,000 square kilometres and has the capacity to accommodate 30,000 namazis at a time. Mr. Azhari said that almost 1 lakh people from India are residing in the Gulf, and all have vowed to give Rs. 1000 each for the cause. The mosque will be part of a developing complex named as Shehr-e-Mubarak. Besides the mosque, there will also be one educational centre, one cultural centre, one hotel, a healthcare city, media centre and a business centre.
