Though the world seems to be modern, advanced and progressive in all segments of life, it is disheartening to see that women continue to face discrimination and violence all across the globe. Despite significant advancements in gender equality and women’s rights, the reality is that women still bear the brunt of societal inequalities, prejudices, abuse and violence. On the occasion of International Women’s Day, we need to analyse the plight of women and work to ensure their protection and empowerment.
In India too it is seen that women continue to be marginalised, oppressed, and subjected to discrimination in various aspects of their lives. From gender pay gaps and limited access to education and healthcare to domestic violence and gender-based crimes, women in India face numerous challenges that hinder their empowerment and full participation in society. The recent rise in cases of violence against women, including rape, harassment at workplace, abuse, and sexual assault, highlightsgreater emphasis on protecting women’s safety.
Moreover, women are often the primary victims of wars, like the devastating situation in Gaza. As innocent civilians caught in the crossfire, women and children face heightened risks of displacement, trauma, and violence. The disproportionate impact of war on women underscores the importance of ensuring their safety, security, and rights in times of crisis.
On this International Women’s Day, the world must understand that women as individuals are an essential part of society and they should be respected. They play a pivotal role in building a society and the efforts they put in are innumerable. It is high time that we come together to protect and promote women’s rights in all possible manners, including enacting and enforcing laws that safeguard women’s rights, investing in education and healthcare for women and girls, and empowering women to lead and participate in decision-making processes at all levels of society. Efforts should also be made to create a safe and inclusive environment where women can thrive and fulfill their potential.
As we commemorate International Women’s Day, let’s build a society where women are valued, respected, and given equal opportunities to live fulfilling and dignified lives. Let us stand united in our resolve to empower women and ensure that their voices are heard, their rights are protected, and their contributions are recognized and celebrated. Happy International Women’s Day to all the incredible women who continue to inspire and drive positive change in the world.
